President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, pro-democracy activist, Chief Anthony Enahoro, and several other notable Nigerians, have described the death of Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), as an irreplaceable loss. The Prominent Nigerian lawyer and rights activist died Saturday after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Fawehinmi passed on yesterday morning in his house at the Ikeja GRA, Lagos after a long battle with Cancer of the lungs. He was aged 71 (1938 - 2009)
Yar’Adua expressed “sadness and a deep feeling of great national loss” at the news of the passing away of the eminent lawyer.
The last words uttered by foremost lawyer, politician and human rights attorney, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, who died yesterday in Lagos at the age of 71, were that he was going to continue to struggle for the emancipation of downtrodden Nigerians in the grave, his widow, Alhaja Ganiyat Fawehinmi, has said.

Its a pity that he had to die. I have read so much about him from naija newspapers and I was surprised to read about his loss. RIP and my prayers are with his family.
