London Socialite dies at 47

No doubt was a good Father (Bayo Gbadebo with His son)

London frontline socialite, Prince Bayo Gbadebo, the Publisher of Prime Magazine, a London based social glossy publication is dead.

He died following a ghastly road accident in the early hours of Saturday morning, presumably coming from a social gathering.

He was aged 47 years.

The car in which he was travelling was said to have rammed into the back of a stationary trailer truck on Sunday morning.

Late Gbadebo graduated as a criminologist from Birkbeck University of London in 1994.

In 2007, he completed his Law course from the University of East London where he obtained LLB.

A source from the committee of friends said his body would be laid to rest in Lagos on July 10 this year.

May His soul RIP. Amen

Gary Coleman's Directuve revealed: KEEP ME ALIVE "AS LONG AS POSSIBLE"

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall in Gary Coleman's hospital room.

It turns out that Coleman signed a health care directive in 2006 which specifically stated that in the event he was incapacitated, he wanted to be kept alive.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the former child star checked a box marked "Choice To Prolong Life" that read: "I want my life to be prolonged as long as possible within the limits of generally accepted health care standards."

But what's more revealing, however, is what Gary didn't check. . .

Coleman left blank the box next to "Choice Not To Prolong Life." That option states: "I do not want my life to be prolonged if (1) I have an incurable and irreversible condition that will result in my death within a relatively short time, (2) I become unconscious and, to a reasonable degree of medical certainty, I will not regain consciousness, or (3) the likely risks of treatment would outweight the expected benefits."

Despite his wishes, only a day after the Diff'rent Strokes star was admitted to a Provo, Utah, hospital after suffering a brain hemmorhage from a fall at his home, his live-in ex-wife, Shannon Price, decided to take him off life support, claiming in the documents that she was "forced" to do so.

Price hasn't explained what she means by "forced."

Legal experts say doctors more often than not ask for agreement from family members in these kinds of situations. So it's possible Coleman's physicians deemed his condition untenable and advised her of that and she acquiesced.

Coleman was plagued by numerous maladies over the years, including congenital kidney disease.

His onetime missus filed the paperwork with the court as part of her claim over the TV icon's body. The legal document lists her as having power of attorney to make health care decisions on his behalf so we can only assume she had the proper information to make such a momentous decision.

A rep for Price was unavailable for comment.

In related news, Coleman's death certificate is finally out and lists as the cause a "closed head injury" along with "chronic renal failure." The document also shows the late actor's marital status as "married" despite the fact that he and Price divorced in 2008.

Fresh reports on DAGRIN's death.....

There are fresh reports goin round on the possibility that popular young and once promising star Dagrin was actually drunk on the the day he was involved in the near fatal auto accident that caused his death.

Sources said some insiders had claimed that the rap artiste's car was filled with liquor at the time of the accident.

The tragic incident which happened at the early hours of wednesday the 14th of April had left a long trail of uncertainties.

Dagrin was said to have been coming from a night studio session when he ran his newly acquired Nissan Ultima into a parked truck in front of Alakara police station in Mushin. As at the time of the accident, Dagrin was left hanging between life and death before he was rescued by policemen on patrol. The policemen reportedly called his manager, Tunde after finding his number on Da Grin’s ‘last dialled’ list. It was gathered that Dagrin was immediately rushed to Tai Solarin Hospital in Olosha where he was given first aid treatment before he was later transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) at Idi Araba in Mushin due to the inapability of T&S Hospital to administer needed treatment.

However, contrary to the stories being circulated earlier as to where he was coming from that morning, sources said that he was actually coming from a friend's place identified as James. We were further hinted that he got intoxicated during his stay with James over the night before he decided to call it a day. A by stander at the scene of the accident revealed that “he must have been drunk and over-speeding because the truck he rammed his car with has been parked at the front of the police station several hours before the tragedy occur, to buttress my point, when we ran to rescue him after the accident, a bottle of Hennessey was found in the car and the whole car was filled with the all sort of liquor induced odour“. Dagrin was said to be in accompany of his close associates, when the accident occured. The damaged car has since been confiscated at Alakara Police Station in Mushin.

And I ask, where could the associates be then at the time of the accident?
If he was in the company of the associates, why was he the only one in the car?

After the accident, sources said it took his management two days to issue a statement. Two days after the fatal accident, a statement was issued by the artiste manager that: Between 2 and 3 am on Wednesday14th of Aril, your favorites indigenous rapper, Olaitan Olanipekun aka Dagrin had car accident along the mushin area of Lagos State. He was on his way back from the studio, where he was recording tracks for his upcoming new album. He came out of the crash with cuts and bruises and has a successful operation to close a cut he sustained during the accident. He’s presently in the hospital, where he’s recovering.
However, this is not meant to be as the lad passed on yesterday obviously not making it through this is after being unconscious even after the operation he went through at the Lagos University teaching Hospital (LUTH).

May his soul rest in peace.

UMAR FAROUK ABDULMUTALLAB charged... + RIP Maryam Babangida

The Nigerian man who tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight travelling to Detroit from Amsterdam on Christmas Day has been formally charged.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was charged with attempting to destroy the aircraft with an explosive that was attached to his body.

US media have cited unnamed security officials as saying that the suspect has confessed that Al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen trained him for the mission.

They say the suspect told them the attack was planned in Yemen by Al Qaeda members. They sewed an explosive device into his underwear. And told him to blow up the plane as it approached Detroit so that it would produce more casualties and collateral damage on the ground if it crashed into a densely populated area.

As investigations continue, British police have searched addresses in London, including an upscale mansion flat where the suspect is believed to have lived while studying in the city. He was said to be a student of mechanical engineering at University College London between 2005 and 2008.

The Life and Times of Fela Kuti

BIOGRAPHY

Fela was born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria,] to a middle-class family. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the first Nigerian woman to drive a car, was a feminist activist in the anti-colonial movement and his father, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, a Protestant minister and school principal, was the first president of the Nigerian Union of Teachers. His brothers, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and Olikoye Ransome-Kuti both medical doctors, are well known in Nigeria.
Fela was sent to London in 1958 to study medicine but decided to study music instead at the Trinity College of Music. While there he formed the band Koola Lobitos, playing a style of music that he would later call afrobeat. The style was a fusion of African jazz and funk with West African highlife. In 1961, Fela married his first wife, Remilekun (Remi) Taylor, with whom he would have three children (Femi, Yeni, and Sola). In 1963, Fela moved back to Nigeria, re-formed Koola Lobitos and trained as a radio producer for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1969, Fela took the band to the United States. While there, Fela discovered the Black Power movement through Sandra Smith (now Izsadore)—a partisan of the Black Panther Party—which would heavily influence his music and political views and renamed the band Nigeria ’70. Soon, the Immigration and Naturalization Service was tipped off by a promoter that Fela and his band were in the US without work permits. The band then performed a quick recording session in Los Angeles that would later be released as The ’69 Los Angeles Sessions.

Fela and his band, renamed Africa '70', returned to Nigeria. He then formed the Kalakuta Republic, a commune, a recording studio, and a home for many connected to the band that he later declared independent from the Nigerian state. Fela set up a nightclub in the Empire Hotel, named the Afro-Spot and then the Afrika Shrine, where he performed regularly. Fela also changed his middle name to Anikulapo (meaning "he who carries death in his pouch"),[4] stating that his original middle name of Ransome was a slave name. The recordings continued, and the music became more politically motivated. Fela's music became very popular among the Nigerian public and Africans in general. In fact, he made the decision to sing in Pidgin English so that his music could be enjoyed by individuals all over Africa, where the local languages spoken are very diverse and numerous. As popular as Fela's music had become in Nigeria and elsewhere, it was also very unpopular with the ruling government, and raids on the Kalakuta Republic were frequent. During 1972 Ginger Baker recorded Stratavarious with Fela appearing alongside Bobby Gass.

On his release Expensive Shit, Fela recounted that in 1974, the police arrived with a search warrant and a cannabis joint, which they had intended to plant on Fela. He became wise to this and swallowed the joint. In response, the police took him into custody and waited to examine his feces. Fela enlisted the help of his prison mates and gave the police someone else's feces, and Fela was freed.

In 1977 Fela and the Afrika ’70 released the hit album Zombie, a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers using the zombie metaphor to describe the methods of the Nigerian military. The album was a smash hit with the people and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Fela was severely beaten, and his elderly mother was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries. The Kalakuta Republic was burned, and Fela's studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed. Fela claimed that he would have been killed if it were not for the intervention of a commanding officer as he was being beaten. Fela's response to the attack was to deliver his mother's coffin to the main army barrack in Lagos and write two songs, "Coffin for Head of State" and "Unknown Soldier," referencing the official inquiry that claimed the commune had been destroyed by an unknown soldier.
Fela and his band then took residence in Crossroads Hotel as the Shrine had been destroyed along with his commune. In 1978 Fela married 27 women, many of whom were his dancers, composers, and singers to mark the anniversary of the attack on the Kalakuta Republic. Later, he was to adopt a rotation system of keeping only twelve simultaneous wives. The year was also marked by two notorious concerts, the first in Accra in which riots broke out during the song Zombie," which led to Fela being banned from entering Ghana. The second was at the Berlin Jazz Festival after which most of Fela's musicians deserted him, due to rumors that Fela was planning to use the entirety of the proceeds to fund his presidential campaign.Despite the massive setbacks, Fela was determined to come back. He formed his own political arty, which he called Movement of the People. In 1979 he put himself forward for President in Nigeria's first elections for more than a decade but his candidature was refused. At this time, Fela created a new band called Egypt 80 and continued to record albums and tour the country. He further infuriated the political establishment by dropping the names of ITT vice-president Moshood Abiola and then General Olusegun Obasanjo at the end of a hot-selling 25-minute political screed titled "I.T.T. (International Thief-Thief)." In 1984, he was again attacked by the Military government, who jailed him on a dubious charge of currency smuggling. His case was taken up by several human-rights groups, and after 20 months, he was released from prison by General Ibrahim Babangida. On his release he divorced his 12 remaining wives, saying that "marriage brings jealousy and selfishness."
Once again, Fela continued to release albums with Egypt 80, made a number of successful tours of the United States and Europe and also continued to be politically active. In 1986, Fela performed in Giants Stadium in New Jersey as part of the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope concert, sharing the bill with Bono, Carlos Santana, and the Neville Brothers. In 1989, Fela & Egypt 80 released the anti-apartheid "Beasts of No Nation" album that depicts on its cover U.S. President Ronald Reagan, UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and South African Prime Minister P.W. Botha with fangs dripping blood. is album output slowed in the 1990s, and eventually he stopped releasing albums altogether. The battle against military corruption in Nigeria was taking its toll, especially during the rise of ictator Sani Abacha. Rumors were also spreading that he was suffering from an illness for which he was refusing treatment. On 3 August 1997, Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, already a prominent AIDS activist and former Minister of Health, stunned the nation by announcing his younger brother's death a day earlier from Kaposi's sarcoma brought on by AIDS. (Their younger brother Beko was in jail at this time at the hand of Abacha for political activity). More than a million people attended Fela's funeral at the site of the old Shrine compound. A new Africa Shrine has opened since Fela's death in a different section of Lagos under the supervision of his son Femi Kuti.

Music

The musical style performed by Fela Kuti is called Afrobeat, which is essentially a fusion of jazz, funk, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. As Iwedi Ojinmah points out in his Article "Baba is Dead - Long Live Baba," Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native "tinker pan" African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masakela, under the uncanny Hedzoleh Soundz. Afrobeat is also characterized by having vocals, and musical structure, along with jazzy, funky horn sections. The endless groove is also used, in which a base rhythm of drums, shekere, muted guitar, and bass guitar are repeated throughout the song.
His band was notable for featuring two baritone saxophones, whereas most groups using this instrument only use one. This is a common technique in African and African-influenced musical styles, and can be seen in funk and hip-hop. Some elements often present in Fela's music are the call-and-response within the chorus and figurative but simple lyrics. Fela's songs were almost always over 10 minutes in length, some reaching the 20- or even 30-minute marks, while some unreleased tracks would last up to 45 minutes when performed live.
This was one of many reasons that his music never reached a substantial degree of popularity outside of Africa. His songs were mostly sung in Nigerian pidgin, although he also performed a few songs in the Yoruba language. Fela's main instruments were the saxophone and the keyboards, but he also played the trumpet, guitar, and took the occasional drum solo. Fela refused to perform songs again after he had already recorded them, which also hindered his popularity outside Africa. Fela was known for his showmanship, and his concerts were often quite outlandish and wild. He referred to his stage act as the Underground Spiritual Game. Fela attempted making a movie but lost all the materials to the fire that was set to his house by the military government in power.

WE ALL LOVE WACKO JACKO...

Medical staff rush Michael Jackson into UCLA's hospital after battling to revive him
The singer's body is carried out of the UCLA Medical Centre

The King of Pop is dead: Michael Jackson passes away - aged 50 - after being rushed to hospital in a coma
Singer Michael Jackson died last night after collapsing at his home in Los Angeles.
The singer stopped breathing and suffered a massive cardiac arrest, although the exact circumstances of his death are unknown.
Paramedics failed to revive the 50 year-old and he was taken to hospital in a coma where he was pronounced dead.
There were unconfirmed reports this morning that Jackson may have suffered a heart attack after receiving an injection of the painkiller Demerol form his private physician.
His mother, brothers, including Jermaine, Tito and Randy and sisters Janet and LaToya, had raced to be at his bedside.

Devastated: Michael Jackson's sister La Toya (left) is seen arriving at the hospital sobbing, followed by his mother, Katherine, on whom he had come to rely in recent months

He had been very frail in recent weeks as he struggled to prepare for 50 concerts in London, which had been due to start on July 13.
Elizabeth Taylor, one of Michael Jackson's closest friends, had been planning to fly out on a private jet to attend Jackson's opening night in London, Larry King said on CNN last night.
Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, told reporters during a press conference that he believed Michael had died from a cardiac arrest, but added that the exact cause of death was not known.
Investigators are likely to focus on claims the singer suffered a long-term addiction to painkillers.
Last month it was alleged he was struggling to make even a handful of the rehearsals for his comeback tour in Britain.
It later emerged he had been to just two out of more than 45 rehearsals.
One Jackson family source said at the time he was 'just not able to pick himself up out of the painkiller stupor' that he was in.
Police said that an emergency call was made from the house at 12.21pm local time [8.21pm UK] last night and paramedics raced to the scene.

Comeback tour: The singer was due to open at the 02 in London next month

Jackson, who has three young children, was seen being taken into an ambulance by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics and moved to the UCLA Medical Centre.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the star was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his home.
When emergency staff arrived, they began resuscitation procedures immediately.
Ten bodyguards followed the ambulance to hospital where the star was rushed into the emergency room on a stretcher.
Doctors again tried to revive him, but attempts failed.
Jermaine Jackson told reporters that medical staff had tried to resuscitate his brother for an hour after he collapsed at his home.
"His personal physician, who was with him at the time, attempted to resuscitate my brother, as did the paramedics who transported him to the UCLA," he said.
"On arrival at 1.14pm (local time) a team of doctors, including emergency physicians and cardiologists, attempted to resuscitate him for one hour but they were unsuccessful."
Jackson's mother and brothers raced from the family home nearby to be at his bedside.
A source close to his family said: 'It's so tragic but he was such a wreck physically that all the signs were there.'
His ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley said that she was 'heartbroken' for his children.
'I am so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. Words fail me,' she said in a statement.
His sister La Toya was spotted running in the UCLA Medical Centre sobbing shortly after he was pronounced dead.
Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, arrived at UCLA hospital to be with the rest of the family shortly after 3pm.

A monitor detailing the 911 call received by paramedics shows that he was not breathing at all
Jackson's longtime publicist Michael Levine said he wasn't surprised by the news.
He said: 'As someone who served as Michael Jackson's publicist during the firstst child molestation incident, I must confess I am not surprised by today's tragic news.
'Michael has been on an impossibly difficult and often self-destructive journey for years. His talent was unquestionable but so too was his discomfort with the norms of the world.'
Jackson had apparently been 'doped up to his eyes' for several weeks with anti-pain prescriptions including Vicodin.
The source, who asked not to be named, said: 'He has pain in his back and that is the reason for the drugs, but it is obvious that the painkillers have taken over his life.'
Another family friend said that his ex-wife Debbie Rowe is expected to receive initial custody of the children while long-term arrangements are sorted.
Another family source said he had become increasingly withdrawn over recent weeks, leaning on his mother Katherine for support as his health deteriorated.
'He had been so frail, both physically and emotionally,' the acquaintance said. 'Many warned he was pushing too hard and overdoing things, but he wanted to get back to work so badly, he kept pushing himself harder and harder.
'He didn't want to let down his fans, and he desperately needed the cash.'

Family man: The singer leaves three children; Prince Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II, known as 'Blanket'.

As news broke of Jackson's heart attack, a member of the Jackson family had told celebrity website TMZ that Michael was 'in really bad shape'. His father had admitted 'he'd not doing well'.
Tributes poured in immediately from the world of celebrity.
Publicist Max Clifford first met the star in the 60s when Mr Clifford was working at record label EMI's press office. He said he had spoken to the singer most recently three weeks before reality TV star Jade Goody died earlier this year when Jackson asked to visit her.
Mr Clifford said: "It is a terrible shock, you wonder if the strain of getting fit for this major tour proved too much. In recent pictures he looked anything but healthy. That's the first thought that went through my mind.

Tears for a hero: Fans, with tears streaming down their faces, comfort each other outside Michael Jackson's home in Los Angeles, where the singer collapsed last night

'When he called to speak to Jade he was anxious to visit her, unfortunately she was too ill but they spoke on the phone and his final words to her were that he wanted to see her and wanted her to come to his show. Sadly she is no longer with us and now he is also no longer with us, it is very sad.
'He was always someone who seemed to find it difficult to cope with fame. He was a great talent. He was already a superstar when he was in his teens but then he was with four others. Then all of a sudden he was on his own and he did seem to find it difficult to cope.'
Music producer Quincy Jones said: 'I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news.'
He said Jackson 'had it all - talent, grace, professionalism and dedication'.
He added: 'I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.'
